Pictou Arroyo; a tributary

~
c.u of the Cucharas River, has-beeu. identified as being. impacted by both heavy

metals and salinity. Cucharas Reservoir supplies irrigation water to

downstream agricultural users. The source of the heavy metals appear to

emanate from old coal mines in the Pictou drainage. Salinity appears to be

related to highly saline soils which are-eroding due to grazing practices.

The SCS and local conservation districts are interested in designing a

monitoring program to determine the extent of nonpoint source problems' in the

drainage.

Colorado River Basin

Three additional. stream segments have been identified in the Colorado River

Basin .for inclusion in the 1989 assessment report. Seven Castles Creek, a

I

tributary to the Fryingpan River, has been identified as contributing

sediments to the Fryingpan River. This si~uation is particularly evident

during storm events. The Fryingpan River is a gold medal fishery as is the

Roaring Fork River to which the Fryingpan is tributary. The source of the

sediment appears to be rerouting of the stream and shortening the channel

length, leading to increased erosion. A study to determine the extent of the

problem, and whether or not construction activities have exacerbated a natural

situation is recommended before any actions are taken on Seven Castles Creek.

-5-
