Disposal of creosote and

pentachlorophenol, in unlined ponds, has resulted in contamination of

groundwater.

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal, a Federal factility located in the First Creek

drainage, in Adams County, is also a CERCLA site. The Arsenal has been

involved in the disposal of chemical warfare materials. Numerous sites on the

27 square mile facility have been used for disposal of hazardous wastes.

.

Unlined ponds, and burial sites have impacted both groundwater and surface

water on and off the Arsenal.

The Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant is located sixteen miles northwest of.

downtown Denver in the upper reaches of the Big Dry Creek drainage.

Production of nuclear devices on the site has led to contamination of soils

and, potentially groundwater, by plutonium and industrial chemicals. Past.

releases of tritium from the site, have led to tritium in Great Western

Reservoir, a drinking water supply.

The South Platte River, between the Burlington Ditch and Big Dry Creek,

increases in sediment and decreases in nitrate concentrations. Phosphorus

levels increase significantly and salinity levels remain similar to upstream

concentrations, as do moderate fecal coliform levels.
