!~'

In addition to these CERCLA s~tes involving landfills, six other CERCLA sites

"

exist in the northern Denver Metropolitan region. Two of these involve

:;~

~
C
Q
~

Federally owned facilities; the other four are related .to privately owned

IW
,;~

industrial sites. A brief description of each follows.

,:~~

Ii
~~

In the Sand Creek drainage two CERCLA sites contribute to both groundwater and

U
t.;,:

surface water pollution. The Sand Creek site is located near Sand Creek close

to the Denver/Adams County border at 48th and Holly. The site consists of

1;-'_':
-,;
.'if.t

four suspected sources of contamination including, acid pits, oil refining, a

chemical production site, and a landfill. Surface and groundwater are

--f~1~

impacted by landfill leachate; hydrocarbons, pesticides, and acidic wastes.

f::;
:i!*
.~~

The second site in the Sand Creek drainage located at 54th and Garfield is the

former site of a chemical plant destroyed by fire in the mid 1960's. The

~~~
contents of the site were buried nearby and have contaminated soils with
toxaphene, chlordane, and dieldrin.
l{~
The Globeville Metals processing plant, a CERCLA site, isa metals refinery
(,-
t~
\?;J
'."'~'
located near 5lst and Washington in Denver. Eight acres of electrolyte
';i.'i
~~1ii
wastepiles are located on the site. A ditch leading from the site.to the
South Platte River contains high concentrations of cadmium, chromium, and lead
~~il
r;')
which have also been detected downstream of the ditch in the Platte River.
~~.
Groundwater both on and off the site contains high levels of cadmium, lead,
iron, and manganese. Since the waste piles are unlined, the metals have been
'\l\
~>;
attributed to the waste piles.
~::<::;
1-~;J
-65-
~.>~
(~
.
