<br />Or.'..,.,.) <br />....,....u . <br /> <br />shall be protected from damage that may be caused <br />by the contractor's construction operations and <br />equipment, The removal of trees or shrubs will be <br />permitted only after prior approval by the <br />contracting officer. <br /> <br />Layout of the contractor's construction plant, <br />location of access and haul routes, and operations in <br />borrow and spoil areas shall be approved by the <br />contracting officer, Both the layout and actual <br />construction of such facilities shall be planned and <br />conducted in such manner that all trees not <br />approved for removal by the contracting officer <br />shall be preserved and adequately protected from <br />either direct or indirect damage by the contractor's <br />operations. The contractor's camp facilities, such as <br />shops, warehouse, storage areas, and parking areas <br />shall be located and arranged so that removal of <br />trees and shrubs will be the minimum practicable as <br />approved by the contracting officer. <br /> <br />Special care shall be exercised where trees or shrubs <br />are exposed to injuries by construction equipment, <br />blasting, excavating. dumping. chemical damage, or <br />other operations; and the contractor shall <br />adequately protect such trees by protective barriers <br />or other methods approved by the contracting <br />officer. <br /> <br />Except in emergency cases or when otherwise <br />approved by the contracting officer, trees shall not <br />be used for anchorages. Where such use is approved, <br />the trunk shall be wrapped with a sufficient <br />thickness of burlap or other approved material over <br />which softwood cleats shall be tied before any rope. <br />cable, or wire is placed. <br /> <br />b. Restoration of damage.- The contractor shall be <br />responsible for injuries to trees caused by his <br />operations. The term "injury" shall include, without <br />limitation, bruising, scarring, tearing, and breaking <br />of roots. trunk, or branches. All injured trees shall <br />be repaired or restored as nearly as practicable <br />without delay to their original condition at the <br />contractor's expense. The contracting officer will <br />determine the method of repair, treatment, or <br />restoration to be used for injured trees as <br />recommended by an experienced horticulturist or <br />tree surgeon. provided by and at the expense of the <br />contractor. All repairs, treatment, or restoration of <br />injured trees shall be performed under the direction <br />of a I icensed tree surgeon provided by and at the <br />expense of the contractor. Repairs shall include <br />shaping of wounds, sealing of wounds or cuts, and <br />removal of damaged limbs. Scars or wounds shall be <br />sealed with an approved tree dressing. Where tree <br /> <br />Par, 39 <br /> <br />climbing is necessary, the use of climbing spurs will <br />not be permitted, and climbing ropes will be <br />required where determined necessary for safety. <br /> <br />Trees that in the opinion of the contracting officer <br />are beyond saving shall be removed and replaced <br />early in the next planting season with a tree of the <br />same species or other approved species, and of the <br />maximum size that is practicable to plant and <br />sustain growth in the particular environment. NeYJly <br />planted trees shall be guyed, watered, and <br />maintained for a period of 1 year. Any newly <br />planted tree that dies shall be removed and replaced <br />as directed, with such replacement trees being <br />maintained for a period of 1 year from the date of <br />replacement. <br /> <br />c. Costs.- The costs of all work required by this <br />paragraph shall be included in the prices bid in the <br />schedule for other items of work. <br /> <br />40. PREVENTION OF WATER <br />POLLUTION AND CONTROL <br />OF TURBIDITY <br /> <br />a. General.- The intent of the following provisions <br />is to prescribe water quality controls and preventive <br />measures for control of turbidity and of pollution in <br />the river due to construction required by these <br />specifications. Water from diversion and foundation <br />tunnel construction, including ground-water seepage <br />from tunnels or other construction activities, shall <br />not be allowed to enter the river without the use of <br />suitable turbidity control methods as described in <br />these specifications. <br /> <br />The lump-sum price bid in the schedule for <br />prevention of water pollution and control of <br />turbidity shall include the costs of: <br /> <br />(1) Furnishing and installing turbidity control <br />plant or system and appurtenances capable of <br />removing turbidity and alkalinity. The turbidity <br />control plant or system and appurtenances shall <br />have a minimum treatment capacity of 200 gpm <br />for the treatment of water from the tunnels. <br />Additional capacity may be required to treat <br />waters seeping through or accumulating behind <br />the structures protecting the diversion tunnel <br />portals, from the washing of the commercially <br />obtained aggregate if such washing is performed <br />by the contractor at the site, and from the <br />contractor's operations other than tunnel <br />construction. Such additional capacity shall be <br />provided by and at the expense of the <br />contractor. <br /> <br />21 <br />
