MAY 1982

Improvement is needed throughout the existing conveyance, distribution,

application and return systems. Reduced salt loading will require total

system emphasis to divert the amount of water needed for crop consumptive

use requirements, leaching, cul tural practices and unavoidable seepage and

spillage losses or deep percolation. Hecause the primary source of salt

pick up is from the underlying Mancos shale formation, overall emphasis must

be placed on reducing seepage from canals, laterals and onfarm ditches,

reducing deep percolation from field irrigation, and in maintaining positive

control over return flows to reduce erosion from fields and drains.

IV-9

lJCJ~S1t\
