.

Ground-Water Supplies

Ground water is an important source of irrigation water in the
lower Cache la Poudre River Basin, A significant part, about 20 per-
cent, of the irrigated area is underlain by aquifers which are capable
of supplying irrigation wells. The most rapid development of the
ground-water resource occurred during the 8-year period, 1947-1954.
Since that period, development has expanded but at a slower rate.

Because the ground-water resource was not uniformly developed
throughout the study period, two ground-water studies were prepared as
follows: (1) an estimate of pumpage that actually occurred, (2) an
estimate of pumpage that would have occurred assuming the 1961 level of
development throughout the study period, The latter study represents
the pumpage anticipated in the future.

The studies were based on: (a) investigations made by the Geological
Survey/~J (b) data on power consumption supplied by companies which serve
the area, and (c) other related data including water table levels and
well tests. Table 4 summarizes the results of ' the ground-water utiliza-
tion studies,

.

y

Lloyd A, Hershey and Paul A, Schneider, Jr" "Ground-Water
Investigations in the Lower Cache la Poudre River Basin, Colorado,"
Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1669-X,U.S, S,P,O"
Washington, 1964, 16
