COLORADO RIVER RECOVERY PROGRAM
FY 98 ANNUAL PROJECT REPORT

RECOVERY PROGRAM
PROJECT NUMBER: CAP-4c

I. Project Tille: Operation of the Redlands Gage

II, Principallnvestigator(s):
Rocky Dial
Bureau of Reclamation
2764 Compass Dr,
Grand Junction, CO 81506
Phone: 970:248-0656
Fax: 97Q-248-0601
e-mail: rdial@uc,usbr,gov

III. Project Summary: This project includes the annual start-up of the Redlands Fish Passage
water measurement equipment and the operation of the Gunnison River gage below the
Redlands Diversion Dam, Since Gunnison River flows at Whitewater were never below
1,250 cfs while the ladder was in operation, flow measurement through the fish ladder
and below Redlands Diversion Dam was not necessary for river management this year.

IV. Study Schedule: It is necessary to perfonn annual and periodic maintenance on both the
fish ladder gage and the Gunnison River gage. As long as the Redlands Fish ladder is in
operation it will be necessary to measure the flows in the ladder during low runoff years,
In addition, the Gunnison River gage will be helpful for maintaining minimum stream flows
below the Redlands Diversion Dam. This worX includes three flow gages; one measures
the flow in the fish ladder, one measures the flow in the attractive flow bypass pipeline,
and the third measures the flow in the Gunnison River below the Redlands Diversion
Dam,

V, Relationship to RIPRAP:- Colorado River Action Plan: Gunnison River
II,B,1.e. Identify and secure minimum flows below Redlands Diversion Dam

VI. Accomplishment of FY 98 Tasks and Deliverables, Discussion of Initial Findings and
Shortcomings:

In November 1997 the gaging equipment at the Redlands Fish ladder was removed for
winter storage and maintenance. The flow meter in the fish ladder bypass pipeline was
damaged and repairs were made. Damage was caused by debris in the water striKing
the flow meter impeller,

In the Spring of 1998, most of equipment was reinstalled and the stilling well for the fish
ladder flow gage was cleaned out. Following construction the intake structure was
modified by the fish ladder operators, In its current configuration the fish ladder intake
structure bypasses the trash rack, Without the benefit of the trash rack the bypass
pipeline flow meter would have been damaged again so it was not installed. In order to
protect the flow meter impeller, the trash rack needs to be used.

Since water year 1998 flows exceeded the needs of the ladder and the downstream
habitat, not all flow measurement was completed which resulted in not utilizing all
budgeted funds,

CAP-4c-l
