./0"

.

.

~

001&33

CRSP Reservoirs

Four generating units are now available for commercial generation at Glen

Canyon. Water is being used for power praduction to the extent that loads and

transmission lines are available. lake Powell is being maintained at approximately

elevation 3,490, which necessitates some water bypasses from time to time. Some

small bypasses of water were made in late December 1964, mid-February 1965, and

early March. An additional bypass was initiated on March 31. These nonpower

releases will probably be more or less continuous now during the spring runoff in order

to return lake Mead to its rated head as soon as possible.

The outlook for runoff from the Upper Basin is very good, for our April 1 fore-

cast is 10,800,000 acre-feet at Glen Canyon. Even if unusual spring weather is

experienced, it now appears that average runoff can be anticipated from the Upper

Colorado River Basin.

We are now releasing water from Navajo as rapidly as the outlet works permit

in order to prevent, or at least delay, flooding of the construction of the inlet portal

of the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project. The outlet valves will remain fully open until

about mid-July when we estimate the reservoir level can be maintained below eleva-

tion 5,955, the level of the inlet portal. Some inundation of the inlet portal will

probably occur before that time, however.

Plans for the operation of Fontenelle are now being made. We are not certain

'lo
yet whether it will be necessary to pass all inflow/or whether it would be desirable to

fill all or part of the reservoir this spring. The reason for not filling the reservoir, of

course, would be to assure the filling of lake Mead to rated head this year.

3
