Vicinity <br /> <br />The Buffalo Peaks WSA is located on the <br />the Arkansas and South Platte River <br />drainages, about 10 miles southeast <br />Colorado, and 80 miles southwest of <br />located in Lake, Chaffee, and Park <br />Vicinity Map Figure 1 and Wilderness <br />Figure 2. <br /> <br />divide between <br />(South Park) <br />of Leadville, <br />Denver. It is <br />Counties. See <br />Study Area Map, <br /> <br />D. Scope of Issues to be Addressed <br /> <br />1. General <br /> <br />This study includes only the area designated as a <br />Wilderness Study Area, by Public Law 96-560. Public <br />Law 96-560 provided that those lands reviewed under <br />RARE II and not designated wilderness or for study <br />by Congress or remaining in further planning need <br />not be reviewed for wilderness option prior to <br />revision of the initial Forest Land Management Plan. <br /> <br />The alternatives in this study report relate only to <br />the suitability or unsuitability of the WSA under <br />study and not to site specific management <br /> <br />2. Issues and Management Concerns <br /> <br />The scoping process conducted as a part of the the <br />Forest Land Management Planning process identified <br />the following public issues: <br /> <br />a. What are appropriate uses within wilderness and <br />how will they be regulated and managed? <br /> <br />b. <br /> <br />Some people feel existing amounts of <br />are adequate while others desire <br />reduce or expand the system. <br /> <br />wilderness <br />ei ther to <br /> <br />c. Once an area is designated wilderness overuse <br />will occur. <br /> <br />d. Some local areas are economically depressed. <br />The designation of an area as wilderness will <br />help to further depress the economy. <br /> <br />2798 <br /> <br />2 <br />
