<br />WILDERNESS STUDY REPORT <br /> <br />BUFFALO PEAKS WILDERNESS STUDY AREA <br /> <br />Pike and San Isabel National Forests <br />Colorado <br /> <br />I. PURPOSE AND NEED <br /> <br />A. Introduction <br /> <br />The 1980 Colorado Wilderness Act, Public Law 96-560 of <br />December 22, 1980, directed the Secretary of Agriculture <br />to review and within three years after the date of <br />enactment, to report to the President and the Congress <br />his reconunendations on the suitability or unsuitability <br />for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation <br />System of ten Wilderness Study Areas within Colorado <br />including the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Study Area (WSA) <br />on the Pike and San Isabel National Forests <br /> <br />This reconunendation will receive further review and <br />possible modification in the offices of the Chief of the <br />Forest Service, the Secretary of Agriculture, and the <br />President of the United States. The President will <br />transmit the Administration's final reconunendation to <br />Congress. Final decisions on wilderness designation have <br />been reserved by Congress. <br /> <br />This study report includes the Buffalo Peaks WSA <br />containing approximately 56,950 acres on the Pike and San <br />Isabel National Forests. <br /> <br />B. Nature and Purpose of Action <br /> <br />The purpose of this study report is to display the <br />information and analysis process used to develop a <br />reconunendation on the suitability or unsuitability of the <br />Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Study Area for inclusion in the <br />National Wilderness Preservation System. <br /> <br />This study is being made through <br />management planning process required <br />lands by the Forest and Rangeland <br />Planning Act of 1974 as amended by <br />Management Act of 1976. <br /> <br />the initial land <br />for National Forest <br />Renewable Resources <br />the National Forest <br /> <br />i <br />, <br /> <br />2797 <br /> <br />1 <br />
