,

The five most significant recreation activities
in Region 4 are picnicking, bicycling, day
hiking on trails, nature study, and softbal1/
baseball. The SCaRP recognizes the Forest
Service has placed high priority on providing
hiking, developed camping, back-country
camping, fishing, and nature study and
recommends the Forest Service place increased
priority on,picnicking and motorcycling.

Region 13 of the SCaRP which includes Fremont,
Custer, Lake, and Chaffee Counties (in which
the western portion of the WSA is located),
recognizes that population growth will continue
to occur and protection of the Arkansas River
is a major concern.

Although this area serves as part of the
Arkansas River watershed, there is no direct
relationship with the river protection issue
except that of water quality. The four top
activities for participation in this region are
day hiking on trails, picnicking, fishing, and
developed camping. Motorcycling and four-
wheeling are also popular. The SCaRP recognizes
that the Forest Service has placed high
priority on providing developed camping, back-
country camping, fishing, and nature study and
recommends the Forest Service place increased
priority on four-wheeling.

b. The Colorado State Division of Wildlife (DOW)
Southeast Region includes the Buffalo Peaks
WSA. The Colorado Comprehensive Management
Plan (December 1977) provides the policies and
objectives along with priorities for the DOW
Regions. Needs for additional and improved
habitat for big game species are relatively
high in priority. A need for population
increases in the maj or species is indicated.

The Colorado Statewide Comprehensive Wildlife
Management Plan for National Forest System
Lands in Colorado (1980-1984) identifies
opportunities for habitat improvement. The
Buffalo Peaks WSA includes winter habitat for
deer, elk, and bighorn sheep which contributes
to the DOW's soUtheast Region Goals and
Objectives.

6

(J,28,,1)
'.' .' t...
