w
CJ'l
co
...

coritrol measures. At that time, WPRS estimated a year to
eighteen months would be required to complete the study.
In the Council's report of March 17, 1979, it urged expe-
ditious completion of the stuies on Las Vegas Wash. The
Council was advised at its September 12, 1980 meeting
that the hydrosalinity evaluation studies would be completed
in October 1980. Work will then be shifted to preparation
of cost-effective salinity control alternatives.
Although the present estimate of the time involved in
completing the studies and developing alternatives is far
in excess of the original estimates there have been delays
because of external influences. These should be resolved
in the foreseeable future. New water quality standards
are being studied as required by a Consent Decree issued
on March 13, 1979, by a United States District Court. The
State of Nevada will set the standards based on a study
which is scheduled for completion June 1, 1981. An effort
is being made to insure that the study, which includes
nutrient control, park and wetlands and waste water manage-
ment, is consistent with salinity control objectives.
Data collection and analysis has been sufficiently
completed to indicate the salt loading mechanism. Formu-
lation of salinity control plans is contingent upon the
waste water management practices of valley water users.
The Council urges that work on this unit be expedited
to determine if an acceptable and cost-effective control
measure can be developed for the Wash.

The Colorado River Water .
Quality Improvement Program

The schedule for completion of the salinity control
planning reports remains essentially as was presented last
year with the exception of Meeker Dome which is expected
to be delayed about eleven months. The Council remains

-5-
