Later the Square S Land and Cattle Company reopened the well for the water but did not plug it when the water was found to be too saline for use. WELL CLOSIN:: A proposal and estimate of cost to plug the Meeker and Piceance Creek wells was prepared by the Bureau or Reclamation and submitted in February 1968 to FHFCA for approval and funding. When the F'rlPCA approved the pro- posal and indicated it would supply the necessary funds, specifications were prepared and bids opened June l8, 1968. The one bid received was $52,886, 21 percent over the Eneineer's estimate. A contract was awarded June 25, 1968, to Willard Pease Drilling Company of Grand Junction, Cole- rado. On July_24, 1968, the contractor moved to the Meeker well on wbite River. After some difficulty in removing the gravel above the bedrock, ,the contractor on July 27, 1968, started clearing the river boulders ~~d gravel from the well with a rotary drill. The well was originally drilled by B cable tool rig and the hole wandered so that it was difficult to fol- low with the rotary drill. Often the rotary drill departed from the old l' hole and drilled through the adjac~nt formations. On July 3l, 1968, mIen the well had been cleared to a depth of 965 feet, the discharge from the well had increased from about 3 to 9 second-feet and threatened to under- mine the drill rig. Therefore, it was decided that sufficient depth of the well had been cleared to adequately plug the well. To reduce the pres- sure and flow of the well, 1,000 sacks of barite were prepafed in a slurry and pumped into the well to a depth of 794 feet, after which l,llOO sacks 6
