REAGAN SUILOING
AUSTIN, TEXAS 78701

August 10, 1976

Mr, James M, Rose, Executive Director
Texas Water Development Board ,
Post Office Box 13087, Capitol Station
Austin, Texas 78711

Dear Mr. Rose:

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has reviewed the Draft 1975 National
Water Assessment:, Arkansas-White-Red RiVlilr .Ilasins, ,State Regional Future -
Texas, We have several recommendations which we feel would assist the Water
Development Board in preparing a final report,

The Texas OUtdoor Recreation plan (TORP) supports the statement on page 8
which reads: "Additional recreational and sanitary facilities on and
surrounding Lake Meredithwou1d,qe desirable,"

Reference is made to natural areas reported in the Arkansas-White-Red River
Basins region on pages 13 and 16, We suggest that the report might be
improved if the natural areas were listed by name and accompanied by a
description of each area, The map could then list each natural area by
number or letter rather than the number of areas per county.

Very little detailed information is presented for water-related recreational
needs in the document, The Water Resources Council guidelines for preparation
of the report specify that recreational needs are to be identified, As.a
result, we are attaching copies of material from the recently updated TORP
, ,-
Regional Summary volume for reference (Attachment A). Although ~ planning
regions do not exactly coincide with the Arkansas-White-Red River Basins
boundaries, they do approximate the regions and the regional summaries could
be used as general guidelines,

Un'fortunate1y, we were not aware the study was in progress, Rearrangement of
TORP data to the study areas might have been accomplished since interaction
with the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Soil Conservation Service regarding
hunting participation in their part of the study was underway,

Several areas within the basins have blilen identified as having potential for
trail development, Inclusion of this t'ype of material might further aid in
preparation of the final document. Pertinent material is attached at Attachment B.2

188

<<

I

I
t
I
1
I

I
I
I

I

I
I

I
I

I
I

I

I
