<br />, <br />." <br /> <br />. <br />.' <br /> <br />OOlG~j3 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />REPORT BY TIlE BUREAU OF RECLAMATION, REGION 4, <br />TO TIlE COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD <br /> <br />September l6, 1965 <br /> <br />Following tests on the turbine and generator, Unit No.5 at GIEN <br /> <br />CANYON DAM was placed in ccmmercial operation on July 19. A sixth unit <br /> <br />is expected to be on line during the first part of October with Units 7 <br /> <br />and 8 following in four-month intervals. Construction was recently started <br /> <br />on the permanent visitor center complex--a joint undertaking of the Bureau <br /> <br />of Reclamation and the National Park Service. <br /> <br />Work is progressing rapidly on the CURECANTI UNIT. Overall percentage <br /> <br />of completion of the prime contract for BLUE MESA DAM and Powerplant is <br /> <br />about 95 percent. The prime contractor expects to finish the dam embank- <br /> <br />ment by mid-October, and the exterior structure of the powerplant is near- <br /> <br />ing completion. Invitations bave been issued to contractors to bid on <br /> <br />completion of the Blue Mesa Powerplant, including installation of tur- <br /> <br />bines, generators, and other electrical equipnent, and to construct the <br /> <br />switchyard for the plant. Bid opening date is set for October 28, 1965. <br /> <br />At MORROW POINT DAM, excavation for the dam fOWldation bas been COlll- <br /> <br />pleted, and on September 3 the first bucket of concrete was placed in <br /> <br />the dam. This represents the first of 360,000 cubic yards needed to <br />complete the 465-foot-high structure. Excavation of the penstock tunnels, <br /> <br />draft tube tunnels, stilling basin, and powerplant chamber continues. <br /> <br />Almost 30 percent of the prtme contract work bas been completed. <br /> <br />More tban 60 percent of the work necessary to cOlllplete the 6.5-mile- <br /> <br />long access road to the CRYSTAL DAMSlTE bas been accomplished. <br />
