REPORT BY TIlE BUREAU OF RECLAMATION, REGION 4, TO TIlE COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD September l6, 1965 Following tests on the turbine and generator, Unit No.5 at GIEN CANYON DAM was placed in ccmmercial operation on July 19. A sixth unit is expected to be on line during the first part of October with Units 7 and 8 following in four-month intervals. Construction was recently started on the permanent visitor center complex--a joint undertaking of the Bureau of Reclamation and the National Park Service. Work is progressing rapidly on the CURECANTI UNIT. Overall percentage of completion of the prime contract for BLUE MESA DAM and Powerplant is about 95 percent. The prime contractor expects to finish the dam embank- ment by mid-October, and the exterior structure of the powerplant is near- ing completion. Invitations bave been issued to contractors to bid on completion of the Blue Mesa Powerplant, including installation of tur- bines, generators, and other electrical equipnent, and to construct the switchyard for the plant. Bid opening date is set for October 28, 1965. At MORROW POINT DAM, excavation for the dam fOWldation bas been COlll- pleted, and on September 3 the first bucket of concrete was placed in the dam. This represents the first of 360,000 cubic yards needed to complete the 465-foot-high structure. Excavation of the penstock tunnels, draft tube tunnels, stilling basin, and powerplant chamber continues. Almost 30 percent of the prtme contract work bas been completed. More tban 60 percent of the work necessary to cOlllplete the 6.5-mile- long access road to the CRYSTAL DAMSlTE bas been accomplished.
