~;."
.~.]

"... .. ~ .... -p,,-
, ~ I :\ .-._ i
. .

. VI. Clarify the taxonon.i c st:ltUS ot the genus G.\ 101.

A. Objective

1. Ensure that project area humpback chub (including the mainstream and
Little Colorado River), bony tail chub from Lake Mohave, and other Gila in
the Lower Basin, as necessary, will be included in the taxonomic study of
Colorado River Basin Gila being conducted by the Fish and llildlife Service
as a part of the Upper Basin Recovery and Implementation Plan

2. Coordinate progress and results with the agencies represented on the
Glen Canyon Consultation Team (Arizona Game and Fish Department, Burean
ot Reclamation, National Park Service. and Fish and Wildlife Service).

B. Oiscussion

Techniques using electrophoresis, mitochondrial DNA, and principle
components analys.is will provide information on the taxonomic composition
of Gila. The study should also include an analysis of gene-environment
interactions. with emphasis on environmental mOdificatio;s due to damming
of the Colorado.River.~nd its tributaries. as potential contributors to
morphological variation in the genus Gila. Information on the humpback
chub may assist our understanding of the continuity of that species
popUlation in the project area. Relative importance of the Grand Canyon
popUlation may be increased if hybridization is found to have affected
other humpback popUlations.

C. Time and Funding

The taxonomic study has already commenced. This program will be under the
direction of the Upper Basin Recovery and Implementation Program which
will set the completion schedule.

Funding for this measure is being provided by the Fish and Wildlife
Service pursuant to Upper Basin, Region 6 commitments as part of the Upper
Basin Recovery and Implementation Program.

8
