<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />fI-..r,13 <br />LL;.),).... <br /> <br />CHAPTER II <br /> <br />LAND AND WATER RESOURCES <br /> <br />A description of the land classes and standards used in the 1933 <br />survey follows. <br /> <br />Class 1 (Arable).--Lands highly suitable for irrigation fanning, <br />capable of producing sustained high yields of all climatically adapted <br />crops at relatively low cost for land development and cultivation under <br />irrigation fanning. <br /> <br />Soil--A minimum of 18 inches of good, free-working soil, sandy loam <br />to friable clay loam in texture, and a total depth of at least 48 <br />inches of nonalkaline material readily penetrable by roots and water. <br /> <br />To:pogrn.phy--Smooth slopes up to 5 percent in general gradient in <br />reasonably large-sized bodies sloping in the same plane. <br /> <br />Drainage--Soil and topographic conditions such that no specific <br />fam drainage is anticipated. <br /> <br />Class 2 (Arable).--Lands moderately suitable for irrigation fanning. <br />Because of l:l:mitations in soils, topography, or drainage, they have a <br />measurably lower productive capacity than class 1 lands, are adapted to <br />a slightly lower range of crops, are more expensive to prepare for irri- <br />gation, or are more costly to fam. <br /> <br />Soil--A minimum of 12 inches of good free-working soil, ranging from <br />loamy sand to very pe:rmeable clay in texture, with a total depth of <br />at least 36 inches of nonalkaline or sli@ltly saline material, read- <br />ily penetrable by roots and water. <br /> <br />Topography--Smooth slopes between 5 and 10 percent or rou@ler slopes <br />of less than 5 percent in general gradient. <br /> <br />Drainage--Soll and topographic conditions such that some fam drain- <br />age will probably be required but with reclamation by artificial <br />means appearing feasible at reasonable cost. <br /> <br />Pezmanently nonarable lands .--Lands which do not meet the m1n:1mum. <br />requirements of class 2 and small areas of arable land lying wi thin <br />larger bodies of nonarablE! land. <br /> <br />Soils <br /> <br />Soils of the project generally reflect the climate and geology of <br />the area. 1hey have resulted from the weathering of sedimentary fonna- <br />tions of marine origin under a prevailing temperate and semiarid <br />cl.1m!<te. Low temperatures during the long winter months restrict <br />weathering and bacterial activity. For these reasons the soils are not <br />deeply weathered, but because of the good growth of vegetation result- <br />ing from moderately high rainfall of the region there is a definite <br /> <br />9 <br />
