<br />by this article to cooperate with the United States in irrigation
<br />projects initiated under the federal reclamation laws.

<br />Under Article 8097, V. c. S., the commiseioners courts are
<br />authorized to "establish one or more drainage districts in their respec-
<br />tive counties" for the purposs of making drainage improvements.

<br />Article 7972, v. c. S., authorizes the creation of levee im-
<br />provement districts "for the purpose of constructing the ma inta ining
<br />levees and other improvements on, along and contiguous to rivers, creeks,
<br />and streams, for the purpose of reclaiming lands from overflow from such
<br />streams, for ths purpose of the control and distribution of the waters
<br />of rivers and streams by straightening and otherwise improving the same,
<br />and for the proper dra inags and other improvement of such lands."

<br />Various other types of districts are authorized for the con-
<br />trol and utilization of the State 'e water resources. Fresh water
<br />supply districts may be created "for the purpose of coneerving, trans-
<br />porting and distributing fresh water from lakes, pools, reservoirs, wells,
<br />springs, creeks and rivers for domestic and commercial purposes."

<br />Wster control and preservation districts DIllY be formed "for
<br />the purpose of the control and preservation oi' the purity of the water
<br />of any river.s, creeks, bayous, lakes, canals, streams or other watel'S
<br />of sny kind and character, situated or flowing, in whole or in part,
<br />through the said district, or any part thsreof, by the prsvention of the
<br />inflow of salt water or other dsleterious substances, or by the changing
<br />of said vaters from salt to fresh vater, and the impounding of frssh watsr
<br />for such purposes." Art. 7809, V. C. S. T[,ese districts have the pover
<br />"t~ Brect, construct, maintain, repair and reconstruct dams, bulkheads,
<br />Jstties, locks, gates, or any other character of improvement or construc-

<br />Watsr control and improvoment districts may be organized under
<br />the provisions of Section 52 of Article 3 of the Constitution for the
<br />"improvement of rivers, creeks, and streams to prevent overfloys, and to
<br />permit of navigation thereof or of irrigation thereof, or in aid of such
<br />purposes," and for the "construction and maintenance of pools, lskes,
<br />reservoirs, dams, canals and wsterways for the purposs of irrigation,
<br />drainage, or navigation, or in sid thereof." Art. 7880-2, V. C, S,
<br />TheB~ districts also may be organized undsr the provisions of Section 59
<br />of Article 16 of ths Constitution for anyone or more of ths purposss
<br />therein provided. Art, 7880-3, V. C. S. Additional powsrs are given
<br />these districts for ths disposal of waste snd for providing facilitiss
<br />and service in ord6r to conserve and promote the public health and wslfars
<br />and protect the purity and eenitary conditions of the State's water.
