The Prairie Dog Town Fork near Estell1ne, Texas, about 28
miles above the Oklahoma State line, with a total drainage area
of 7,238 square miles, and a total contributing area variously
estimated as 2,470 to 4,040 square miles} has a mean annual flow
of 91,470 acre-feet for the period 1938-49

Salt Fork rises in the High Plains of the central Texas
Panhandle south of Amarillo and flows easterly to Mangum, Oklahoma,
then turns south to enter Prairie Dog Town Fork about 15 miles above
North Fork. The gage at Mangum, with a contributing area of about
1,370 square miles, of which 215 square miles are in Oklahoma, has a
mean annual runoff for the period 1938-49 of 68,560 acre-feet.

The North Fork rises in the central Texas Panhandle north of
Salt Fork, flows east into Oklahoma, then south to join Prairie Dog
Town Fork and form the Red River. The Altus Reservoir (W. C. Austin
Project) utilizes the flow of this stream for irrigation of about
50,000 acres and municipal water supply for the City of Altus.

The uppermost major tributary to enter the Red River from the
south is Pease River. The Pease River near Crowell, Texas, with a
total drainage area of 3,603 square miles, of which 530 square miles
are estimated to be non-contributing, has a mean annual flow of
slightly less than 100,000 acre-feet for the nine years of record,
1939-47. The stream flow is highly mineralized with calcium sul-
phate and sodium chloride.

The next major tributary is the Wichita River, which parallels
the Pease River, and flows in an easterly direction into the ~ed
River. Lake Kemp, with a contributing drainage area of 1,988 square
miles and a capacity of 438,000 acre-feet, located about 50 miles
a.bove Wi chi ta F..lls, Texas, is used for storing water for the irri-
gation of about 42,000 acres near Wichita Falls. The mean annual
runoff for the gage at Wichita Fa.lls, with a contributing area of
3,105 square miles (including 1,988 above Lake Kemp) was about
110,000 acre-feet, for the nine years, 1939-47.

The Red River near Terral, Oklahoma, has a drainage area of
28,727 square miles, of which about 5,440 square miles probably is
non-contributing. The mean annual r1.iIloff for this gage, for the
period 1938-49, is 1,956,000 acre-feet. Approximations based on
the available short records of stream flov indicate that about 46
per cent (46%) of the flov originates in Oklahoma, though only about
26 per cent (261)) of the total drainage area is in that state.

In the vicinity of Terral the Red River passes through a narrov
band of the Highlands province, locally known as West Cross
Timbers and Grand Prairie, then enters the Coastal Plain. Just
