These means have been con-
sidered in the preliminary aqueduct design and are reflected in .the cost
estimates shown for the plans.

Sod a 1

Relocation of families along the aqueduct right-of-way has been identified
as a potential social impact associated with the selection of the Tucson
Aqueduct Phase B' alignment.

Relocations are possible from both the West and East Side Plans. Reloca-
ti on requi rements are tentati ve because the preci se aqueduct a 1 i nements
have not yet been identified. Further refinement will take place following
selection of the proposed action.

Any families requiring relocation would be compensated for losses attribut-
able to project construction. Relocation assistance would also be provided.

Ani ne foot fence wi 11 be bui 1 tal ong a 11 open canals as a deterrent to
human access, thereby, minimizing the potential of human drownings.

Visual Resources

The Saguaro National Monument-Tucson Mountain Unit, the Arizona-Sonora
Desert Museum, and the Tucson Mountain Park have been identified as areas
that may be sensitive to visual changes brought about by aqueduct and
transmission line construction. The open canal and power transmission
lines used in the West Side Plan are expected to be visible from some loca-
tions within these areas but it would not be a dominant feature of the view.
The canal would be about 1 mile from the nearest viewing point along Kinney
Road in the Saguaro National Monument and about 2 miles from the Desert
Museum. A mitigation plan to reduce visual impacts will be developed after
the proposed action is selected and may include such concepts as revegeta-
tion, landscaping, and land contouring.

11
