OJJOI0

Water access and use rights are provided for by corridors to and exclu-
sion of Sandbeach, Bluebird and Pear Reservoirs. West of Pear Reservoir
the wilderness line then follows the park boundary to the Grand Lake
area, excepting a small inholding south of Shadow Mountain Reservoir.
After excluding inholdings, water inlets and structures around the Grand
Lake entrance area, the line follows topographic features north to Bea-
ver Creek, roughly paralleling the existing highway. The Wilderness
line then turns northeast to exclude road realignment and communications
lines, then roughly follows the Trail Ridge Road on topographic features
and excluding the Hidden Valley Ski Area, to the Many Parks Curve area,

The Eureka Ditch is excluded from the wilderness in a corridor 20 feet
wide. Fifty-nine backcountry campsites and sanitary control points,
two patrol cabins, two stone shelters, a fire lookout, and the under-
ground telephone line from Longs Peak Campground to Jim's Grove are
within the proposed wilderness.

The historic Hallett Creek Cabin and Fern Lake Lodge also lie within
the proposed wilderness unit. They have been nominated to the National
Register of Historic Places, and are to be retained, restored, and
interpreted as historic structures and, in an emergency, would provide
simple shelter for wilderness travelers. The Ute Trail which crosses
this unit and Unit 3 has also been nominated to the National Register
of Historic Places. The Eugenia Mine site, near the Longs Peak Camp-
ground, is also within this unit.

Unit 5 - Meadow Mountain

A 2,200 acre wilderness is proposed in the southeast corner of the
park. This unit is separated from the larger wilderness Unit 4 by
the water rights corridor.

Potential Wilderness Additions

Areas classified in the master plan for future management in a primi-
tive condition but which do not qualify as wilderness because of
conflicting private uses or interests are being proposed as potential
wilderness additions.

A special provision is recommended in the legislation establishing
wilderness at Rocky Mountain National Park giving the Secretary of
the Interior the authority to designate these lands as wilderness at
such time he determines they are qualified. These lands total 5,169
acres and are in the following parts of the park:

Lawn Lake Area - 500 acres

Lawn Lake and a corridor of land from the Fall River Road

adjoining wilderness Unit 1 are subject to an existing water
right.

7
