.:)

-:j"
..-I

Nearly all the evaluations of farm irrigation systems will be conducted

according to procedures given in National Irrigation Guide Notices No.1

...,.....

No.2, and No.3. Copies are available at SCS state offices. Some additions

to the procedure are required to account for deep percolation. Data will be

collected to determine the amount of water infiltrated into the soil. Soils

will be sampled to determine available water capacity and soil salinity.

Climatological data will be collected at each site as needed. For each site,

onfarm water budgets will be prepared for each irrigation ev,ent, starting

with the preplant or start of the growing season until crop harvest. The

most significant output from the water budget is deep percolation. The amount

of reduction in seepage from di tches and laterals and deep percolation will

be translated into salinity benefits.

It is possible to increase the accuracy of data collection and reduce the

staffing needs by investing in equipment to record and analy:~e field

information on each irrigation. Four equipment levels were evaluated.

Equipment Level 4 at Sampling Level 2 was selected for the r,ecounnended plan

because it provides the accuracy and number of samples to provide acceptable

evidence of program impacts.

The following table displays the staffing and funding requirements for a

lo-year program at 3 sampling levels and 4 equipment levels:

Monitoring and Evaluating Onfarm Irrigation, Uinta Basin and Grand Valley

Cost for 10 Years

Staffing for 10 Years

Equipment
Level

Sampling Level
1 2 3

Sampling Level
1 2 3

(Thousands of Dollars )-- -.--

(Work-Years)

EI.-l
EL-2
EL-3
EI.-4

390 1,171 1,947
547 1,611 2,684
597 1,406 2,228
605 1,287 2,009
2

16
21
11
8

48
63
32
25

80
105
54
41
