<br />\ <br /> <br />., <br />" <br /> <br />TITLE 36 - PARKS, FORESTS, AND MEMORIALS <br /> <br />Chapter II - Forest Service, Oenartment of Anriculture <br />RECREATION Itl NATIONAL FORESTS <br />Redesiqnation of Existinq Renulations . <br />Part 293 - WILDERNESSES AND PRiMITIVE AREAS <br /> <br />Section 293.1 - Definition <br /> <br />National Forest Wilderness shRll consist of those units of the National <br />Wilderness Dreservation Svstem which at least 30 days before the Wilder- <br />ness Act of Sentember 3, .1964, were des i'1nated as \-:"i 1 derness ancl Wil cI <br />under Secretary of Aoriculture's Renulations U-l and U-2 (36 C.F.R. <br />251.20, 251.21), the Boundary Waters Canoe Area as desinnated under <br />Reoulation U-3 (36 C.F.R. 251.221, and such other areas of the ~ational <br />Forests as may later he added to the System by act of Conqress. Sections <br />251.70 to 251.84 anoly to all National Forest units now or hereafter in <br />the National IHlderne.ss Preservation System, includinn the Coundary ,Jaters <br />Canoe AreR, SUnerior Mational Forest, excent as that area is subject to <br />Section 251.85. <br /> <br />Section 293.2 - Objectives <br /> <br />Excent as othenlise nrovided in thpse r(>'1ulations, national Forest \.!ilder- <br />ness shall be so administered as to meet the nublic nurroses of recreational, <br />scenic, scientific, educRtional, conservation, and historical uses; and it <br />shall also be administered for such other nurposes for which it mRV have <br />been established in such a manner as to preserve and protect its wilderness <br />character. In carrvino out such nurnoses, National Forest \'!ildernpss re- <br />sources shall be manaoed to promote, perpetuate, and v!here necessary, <br />restore the wilderness character of the land and its specific values of <br />solitude, physical and mental challenqe, scientific study, inspiration, <br />and primitive recreation. <br /> <br />To that end: <br /> <br />a. Matural ecolooical succession will be allowed tn operate freely <br />to the extent feasible. <br /> <br />b. Wild.erness vlill be made available for human use to the ontimulil <br />extent consistent with the maintenance of nrimitive conditions. <br /> <br />c. In resolvino conflicts in resource use, wilderness values will <br />be dominant to the extent not limited hy the \-Ii lderness Act, <br />suhseouent establishino lenislation, or these rpoulations. <br /> <br />0941 <br />
