CREDA members serve
some 3 million people in 6 states and its members
purchase approximately 85% of the power resources
marketed by the Salt Lake city Area Office of Western.
Glen Canyon Dam has historically produced approximately
70% of the resources marketed by the Salt Lake city
Area Office. Thus, you can see that CREDA members have
an immense stake in the outcome of the deliberations
over how Glen Canyon Dam should be operated in the
future.

.,

~~ .

"

.:...

.
~
..
,-.
.,

-.:...
:';'.'
~:

As you know, CREDA and its member non-profit utilities
have participated in the process leading up to the
development of the draft environmental impact statement
for Glen Canyon Dam operations. In doing so, we have
witnessed both successes and failures in the process.

We wish to note some of these successes. The
scientists have determined that it takes sustained
water flows through the Grand Canyon of 25,000 cfs or
greater before the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam
suffers a net sediment loss to Lake Mead. Knowing this
fact is important because it not only aids in deciding
the upper limit of the maximum flow criterion but
suggests that fluctuating water flows during low and
medium volume water release years can guard against
