<br />SALINITY <br />CONTROL ~' <br />\...A...A..A..A,.....< - <br />\.AAA.AJI. <br />~ '-^- <br /> <br /> <br />The Colorado River Water Quality Im- <br />provement Program was begun in fiscal <br />year 1972 and IS scheduled to contenue <br />through fiscal year 1981. The objective <br />is to investigate and develop plans to <br />control the buildup of salinity concen- <br />tration In the river system. Authority <br />for the Investigation is derived from <br />Public Laws 84.485, 87.483, and 87. <br />590 relating to the Colorado River Stor- <br />age Project and ParticIpating Projects, <br />Navajo Indian Irrigation Project and San <br />Juan.Chama Project, and the Fryingpan- <br />Arkansas Project. respectively. Fea. <br />Slblllty studies were scheduled to be <br />made on irrigation, point, and dIffuse <br />salinity sources. Studies will require de. <br />velopment at a mathematical model of <br />the Colorado River, economic analysis <br />01 water quality. analysis 01 legal and <br />inslltutional matters, and the investiga. <br />tion of potentials for improving water <br />Quality at points of diversion. Irrigation <br />sources will be studied for possible <br />Improvements, both to the physical <br />systems and to the management tech- <br />niques. <br /> <br />The Colorado River Basin Salinity Con- <br />trol Act (P.l. 93.320. June 24. 1974) <br />authorized the Secretary of the Interior <br />to construct and operate the Parada)!: <br />Valley. Grand Valley, and Crystal Geyser <br />Units In the Upper Colorado River Basin <br /> <br />and the Las Vegas Wash Unit in the <br />Lower Colorado River Basin. Advance <br />planning on these units IS underway. <br />The Parado)( Valley Unit will be de. <br />signed to intercept and dIspose of <br />highly saline ground waters now enter. <br />109 a short section of the Dolores River <br />In southwestern Colorado. Control <br />measures in Grand Valley.
