"

~
.....-
..r::.
00

NPDES Permit No. ,CO-0042161
Salinitr Control Study

Twentymile Coal Company,

All inv~till'ated options deplete discharge flows, and are likely to require a surface 'Yater
permit. 'Option I entails complete elimination of discharge, Option 2 of 25 % and Option 3 of
a small~ fraction. Surface water, rights may be difficult to obtain if the depletion is deemed to
damage ia designated Alluvial Valley Floor.

All inv~tigated options would only marginally reduce salt load and IDS concentration in Fish
Creek,

Capital qasts of the investigated options range from 2.4 to 4.8 million dollars, withoperl\ting-
costs rlll/ging between $94,000 and $302,000 per year. These costs are prohibitive when
compare(( with the actual benefit that would be realized. It is therefore the recominendation of
this stu4v that no additional water treatment measures be implemented and that continued
discharg+ of mine water be followed in accordance with the existing permit.

~

AHA Hlename; 1ASALCN'1.DOC

Page 34

11,59 AM 09129/95

, j

',.,
"~'~;
li.ii.
