1lO2~4o

.

CHAPl'ZR III

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
(Two Bar unit)

Two Bar Unit

The Two Dar unit is a potential irrigation development for 4,260 acres
of full service land located along the Yampa and Little Snake Rivers in the
vicinity of the rivers' confluence in northwestern Colorado. Ser\"ice of
the presently irri6ated land is not included in this analysis as the land
area is srruall and could receive only a small increase in supply. Much of
the land that could be served by the Two Bar unit would be inundated with
development of the Lily Park hydroelectric power site discussed on page 79.

Unit plan

Two sources of water supply would" be developed for the Two Bar unit.
Unit lands on the north side of the Yampa River would be supplied from
the Little SnaKe River. lands on the south side of the Yampa River would
be supplied with water from the Yampa.

.

Water for lands north of Yampa River would be suppliedlIlrimarily
from return flow from the potential Savery-Pot Hook project=}in Colorado
and ,iyoming. The return flow would be supplemented by storage water. For
purposes of this analysis it is assumed that the storage water would be
provided from an enlargement of the Savery Reservoir of the Savery-Pot
Hook project that would be constructed on Savery Creek. a tributary of the
Little Snake River. Storage, however, could be provided at alternative
sites on the Middle Fork of the Little Snake River.

Both the return flow and storage water would be diverted from the
lower reaches of the Little Snake River. The Two Bar Canal would divert
about 35 miles below the Savery-Pot Hook project and would serve a narrow
strip of land along the south side of t:1e Little Snake River. The Deerlodge
and Lily Canals would head at a common point about 25 miles belo" the head
of the Two Bar Canal. The Deerlodbe Canal would extend southwest, serving
lands on the west side of the Little Snake River and on the north side of
the Yampa River below the confluence of the two rivers. The Lily Canal
would extend southeast and would serve lands bet"een the Little Snake and
Yampa above the rivers' confluence.

.

Lands south of Yampa River would receive their water supply from the
tailrace of the potential Cross Mountain powerplant, a potential but as
yet unauthorized feature of the Colorado River Storage project. Tile water
would be diverted from the left side of the tailrace and conve:ied to the
unit lands through the potential Cross Mountain Canal. If the powerplant
is not constructed, a diversion dam would be re~uired on the Yampa River,
and although an economically feasible development COuld be made, it would
be considerably less attractive"econcmically than that outlined in this
report. r.._

!I The Savery-Pot Hook project is further discussed on prlGe 76.

49
