.

.

.

0023~5

CHAPrER III

PROJECT DEVELOPMENl'
(Juniper unit)

Subalternatives for the Juniper unit include different routes for
the canal from Juniper Reservoir to Deadman Bench. These routes extend
down the north side of the Yampa River and then cross the river by means
of a long siphon. The costs for canals along these routes are more than
for the selected plan. The studies for all plans indicated that the
lareer the area served, the more economically feasible would be the
development.

The selected plan of development colild be eXpanded to include the
potential hydropower developments of Juniper Dam site and other sites
downstream on the Yampa River. These potentialities were not appraised
for this report but are discussed briefly in Chapter IV.

Competitive uses for the water utilized by the Juniper unit include
trans basin diversions from Elk River north of Steamboat Springs to
either the main Colorado River drainage or the Little Snake River
drainage. A preliminary appraisal indicated that the diversion to the
Colorado River would be economically infeasible. The diversion to the
- Little Snake River is discussed in Chapter IV under the Great Divide
unit plan.

48
