yon Dam (two miles upstream from
the Jemez River's confluence with the
Rio Grande),

Congress passed the Flood Control
Act of 1948 which generally reflected
the report recommendations. The
Act, however, did not authorize con-
struction of Chiflo Dam, Also, in 1955
the proposed site for the Chamita
Dam was moved 30 miles up the Rio
Chama to Abiquiu and renamed
accordingly.

The Corps and Bureau began exten-
sive work on the Middle Rio Grande
Project in accordance with the direc-
tive from Congress. The Bureau
cleared sediment from the Rio
Grande bed and channelized por-
tions of the river. It also worked with
the MRGCD to improve the District's
drainage structures. Concurrently,
the Corps initiated extensive levee
construction, including 22 miles of
levees to protect the Albuquerque
area. An additional US miles of
levees were built in the middle reach
of the valley where flood control was
deemed necessary.

Jemez Canyon Dam was the first
flood control darn built as part of the
Middle Rio Grande Project. Com-
pleted by the Corps in 1953, the dam
stores summer floods and also traps
sediment that would otherwise move
downstream and clog the Rio Grande
channel. The Jemez Reservoir has a
storage capacity of 113,100 acre feet,
flanked in one area by a 2,900 foot
long levee in order to prevent back-
water from inundating portions of
the Santa Ana Pueblo,

Plans for constructing Abiquiu Dam
commenced shortly after completion
of Jemez Canyon Dam. Abiquiu Dam,
which began flood control operations
in 1963, rises 343 feet above the Rio
Chama bed and extends 1,540 feet in
length. 11 has a potential storage
capacity of more than 1.2 million acre
feet if fully utilized, This was the sec.
ond dam constructed by the Corps as
part of the Middle Rio Grande Pro.
jeel, with the other two dams (Coehiti
and Galisteo) authorized by Congress
in the Flood Control Act of 1960.
Authorization of these two dams fol~
