0"'..\ -..
, "

Increased costs of operation and maintenance have caused

delays to providing required maintenance activities. In

addition, the existing systems did not allow the operational

control needed to properly manage water distribution. Thus,

it became clear to the hydro-irrigation division of CNPPID

that a complete modernization program was needed to improve

efficiencies, minimize operational costs, and provide full

water demands to all areas of the District.

Power Facilities. Original project construction included

three hydro plants utilizing head developed by the supply

canal bringing irrigation water to the project lands 161 krn

away. Two of the plants have twin 9.000 ktV genera tors with

34 m of head and the third a single 18,000 kW generator ~ith

";4 1!l of head.

In 1958, the 100 r-n.; natural gas or oil fired, Canaday Stearn

Plant was completed. It was located on the tailrace of the

last hydro plant, just above the diversion for the Phelps

Main (irrigation) Canal, and used canal water for condenser

cooling.

All power generated by the District is sold to the Nebraska

Public Power District at the bus bar since the Central

District maintains no distribution facilities.

-8-
