Annual Report for 1968

The Great P/a;ns Reservoir And Canals

Another open winter with nearly constant winter irri~tion above
John Martin caused storage water to be in short supply. All of the small
amount available was placed in Queen Reservoirs. The carry-over storage
from 1965 . 66 in Nee No She Reservoir proved once again to be of great
value to the Amity System. B,r comparing the table of Comanche Canal
diversions with the AmitJ' Headgate diversion one can see how reservoir
water was used to supplement the sometimes erratic river now. Reservoir
water comprised one-fourth the total Amit~' diversion and made up nearl,}' all
the water available in May, September and October.

The large dragline and dozer were used extensivel,y on the lUcking
Bird Canal. The area which requires the most frequent maintenance work
is the first 4 miles of this canal. This is caused partly because of the slow
grade of the canal (about 6 inches per mile) and partly because of the trash
sent down the Kicking Bird simply to remove it from the Fort Lyon Canal.
We took more than 15,000. Cu. Yd. of silt from the first 6,000 feet of this
canal.

The cut between upper and lower Queen Reservoirs was cleaned in an
effort to obtain more l\'ater [rom the upper lake. This operation necessitated
the use of mats for the Bantam dragline. This is time - consuming and
expensive.

The Pawnee Canal was cleaned with dragline and dozer. The dozer
was also used in the Satanta and Comanche Canals.

WATER DIVERTED FROM THE FT.
