I .1

Diversion Dam which contains only minimal storage capacity,

will be modified so that it can function as are-regulating

reservoir. With 3 million m3 of storage available in Lake

Ogallala, the normal daily summer release of 57 m3/s

can be increased to 156 m3/s on a peaking basis for about 8-

10 hours per day.

The new plant will generate 89 million kWh during an average

year. This will help offset the District's dependency on

scarce and increasingly expensive fossil fuels and will

produce energy equivalent to 150,000 barrels of oil each

year.

The estiMated total project costs, at 1977 price levels, was

$2(,.2 million. The project is currently under construction

and is scheduled to begin producing power in 1984.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS

Though the facilities of the Central Nebraska Public Power

and Irrigation District were suitable at the time they were

constructed in the 1930's and 19401s, they cannot fully meet

the demands being placed on them today. Fortunately, the

District's Board of Directors and staff had the wisdom to

take the big step and initiated an extensive modernization

program that will pay benefits for years to come.

-20-
