Yet, considc..ation of the two matters, "Nater <br />I <br />I <br />;;upply" and "\\Tater quality", remained separated in the Department <br />i <br />6f the Interior, in the Congress, and in the Basin. <br /> <br />The Colorado River Basin Project Act 'includes ",-later quality" <br /> <br />s a purpose of the project but it is silent on any specific <br /> <br />fater quality standards and no means of improving water quality <br />r r~ducing salinity are authorized. The Act recognized, of <br />ourse, that the Secretary was continuing the salinity studies <br /> <br />reviously authorized. <br /> <br />\\TA?ER QUALITY ACT of 1965 <br /> <br />Although not considered as a part of. the "La\-l of the River, <br /> <br />rhe\\Tater Quality Act of 1965 led directly to the enactment of the <br />b.ost recent addition to the "Law of the River", the Colorado River <br /> <br />asin Salinity Control Act. <br /> <br />'l'he \\Tater Quality Act of 1965 provided for establishment and <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />rnforccment of water quality standards for such interstate waters <br />as the Colorado River System. The states of ~he basin~taking a <br />~egiOnal approach to compliance with this Act, agreed in 1967 <br />I <br />bn guidelines for formulating water quality standards.
