<br />(~ <br />'t:f;}J <br /> <br />nJTRODUCTION <br /> <br />The investigation of the Florida project WdS undertaken, <br /> <br />wi th a nUlllber of other "Western Slope,1 projects in Colorado, as a <br /> <br />part of Public l'"orks project (F.P,49) with an allotment of ~150,OOO <br /> <br />fram the appropriation made available under the National Recovery <br /> <br />Act of June Ib, 1933. Tho purpose of the public works project was <br /> <br />stated to be <br /> <br />,IStudy of possible irrigation and power developments in <br />the State of Colorado, particularly in that portion <br />west of the Continental Divide," <br /> <br />The Colorado State Planning Commission cooperated in the <br /> <br />selection of projects, preference being given 'to areas already <br /> <br />'Wl~', <br />,&..~.,,: <br />,~~.~,... <br /> <br />irrigated and in acute need of supplemental water supply. An active <br /> <br />interest in such development by the settlers and an expressed will- <br /> <br />ingness to pay for such workS, if built, under the terms of the <br /> <br />National Reclamation Act, were prerequisites to investigation. <br /> <br />Through the existing association of water users on Florida <br /> <br />River, the Florida Mesa Water Users' Association, the landowners <br /> <br />signified their ~111ingness to repay the cost of a project under <br /> <br />the terms required, Work was commenced in May 1936 and has con- <br /> <br />tinued intermittently since, In September 1938, work in progress <br /> <br />under the original appropriation was transferred to Colorado River <br /> <br />Basin Investigations and has been continued on appropriations for <br /> <br />that purpose under the provisions of Section 15 of the Boulder <br /> <br />Canyon Act. <br /> <br />A <br />
