~
~;J

study the relation between weighted average altitude of drainage

area ~nd runoff per square mile was quite fully developed, and

/'

may be used as a basis for deriving the runoff at the site of the

~

proposed reservoirs from the record at the gaging station.

The last period of record, April 1, 1927, to September 30,

1936, has been ()hosen as the controlling period of study bec'luse it

is the longest consecutive record on the river. It has the advantage

also that there were no consecutive years of high flow and that same

of the lowest nows ever known on Florida River occurred during the

period. The results with supplemental storage during such a period

should be a very conservative picture of what will occur with a given

storage capacity,.

Runoff at the station muy be considered as the supply avail-

...~
t"r'~~~~
'.~ik:.;~'

able for project use, The diversions above the station, both for

irrigation of non-project lands and for the city of Durango have

automatically been subtracted fram the present record. Diversions

outside the project below the station are from tributaries so low on

the stream that no water can be diverted to the project from these

streams except, perhaps, in small degree for the lower end of the

project land in the river valley. l~ile the city stores same water

its total of stor~ge and diversion is less than 310 of the average

annual flow of the river at the gage, and future increases in such

diversion will not encroach materially on project supplies.

The runoff for the periods of 1917 to 1924 and 1927 to 1936

is shown in Table 6.

39
