.
:;::'-".
"'"

advisable to avoid removal of top soils. Unirrigated land is largely

in sagebrush or in scattered timber. It is estimated by farmers on

the project that sagebrush land can be cleared for cultivation and

;>

necessary leveling done for about $7 to $10 per acre.

The condition of the present irrigating ditches is rela-

tively poor. Practically all of them will require enlargement and

repairs. Subdivision of holdings and extension to new land will re-

quire construction of numerous sublaterals and farm ditches. Exist-

ing structures are hardly adequate for an efficient system and will

require replacement. Many new turnout structures will be necessary.

The individual farmers can do most of this work themselves.

Drainage is not a project problem because of the rolling

topography and good soil drainage. Minor areas along drainage channels

Wl~
~j71

may become seeped with full project development but they will probably

be used for pasture and no extensive drainage work attempted.

A few roads to serve the subdivided area may be necessary

and they will be constructed by the county as needed. The present

main roads should be improved by graveling in order to give easier

access to the project and cheaper transportation for the marketing of

crops.

31

it.)
