""l\\
~&

south boundary of this tract, called the Ute Ceded Lands, runs

across the project in the vicinity 2f the settlement of Falfa.

;

There had been farming on a snall scale along the NC~ncos,

La Plata, and Animas Rivers before the ceded lands were purchased,

and these settlements soon grew to abo:ut their present size.

Settlement on Florida and Pino Rivers ~~s not so rapid,

as thore ~~s little desirable land outside the reservation, and it

was not until the reservation was opened NCay 4, 1899, that settle-

ment really began. At this opening the Ute Indians accepted 374

allotments of land, with a total of 60,000 acres, and the remain-

ing 636,000 acres was soen culled over 'lnd the better lands settled.

Frnm that time the history of the project has been typical

e
''''4.~

of newly settled areas in the irrigated West. Experiment led to

c~er-production of crops not suited to the country, or for which

markets were not 'lvailable. This with a slow but fairly constant

growth breught ",bout the farming of more hnd than the natural

flow of the r hers would serve.

This fact was recognized as early as 1910, but a period

of increased runoff followed and the settlers lost sight of the

need far st0rage. The greatly reduced runoff of the last 10 years

has again demonstrated that need.

Previ0us Investigations.

During the early years of the present century when the

Carey Act was in active operation, the Pine River valley was the

scene of a proposed pr0ject under this act.
