"i ....J

CHAPTER VI

UNAVOIDABLE ADVERSE EFFECTS

The unavoidable adverse effects for the proposed alinement are
identified under each environmental element.

A. Geology

About 15 miles will require excavation by blasting. The rock spoil
will be placed back into the trench, distributed within the easement,
and used as fill in the trench gully used by the conduit in the
Arkansas River Valley. Any concentration of the scattered rock
material within the easement would be difficult to revegetate.
Fresh cut rocks may contrast with the weathered rocks in the
Arkansas Valley.

.

B. Hydro lOllY

Water for the Fountain V8:i'IiIe~ C.onduit. will be "flow through" water
but some could be stored in ~~o.Reservoir. Some of this water
. Canon City will be
evaporated and transpired into the arid arilIosphere before it 1.8
released from Pueblo Dam into the conduit.

C. Water Quality

Two perennial streams, the ArkansascRiver below Pueblo Dam and
Fountain Creek, will be crossed b.jr .'the conduit. During installation
,
of the conduit, there will be a mino, amount of turbidity raised
I .
in the stream. It will be short-term during installation of a
temporary cofferdam. .

D. Soils

,..

..'..("

The soils of the proposed alinement are largely fine textured and
shale derived. Disturbed areas will have a slow infiltration rate,
high runoff potential, and a high susceptibility to wind erosion
and production of airborne dust. The reestablishment of native
vegetative species will also be very slow because of some shallow
soils and the arid conditions.

.

VI-l

:~ "'1,'
