.

.

..

I.

0767

.

flows at Trinidad for flood control would give an opportunity for addi-

tional diversions in the project area. Assuming that these additional

diversions are made, the maximum average annual additional net reduction

of usable water supply at John Martin Reservoir would be 190 acre-feet.

Therefore, the total estimated project depletion of the average annual

usable water supply at John Martin Reservoir would be 390 acre-feet. This

amount is considered a conservative estimate of the maximum reduction.

The detailed results of these studies are included in the Bureau of Recla-

mation irrigat5.OY; report which is contained in appendix D.

LETERMINA TION OF SPlilllAY REQ UIREI1ENTS

511. Spill~Jay design storm. - The maximum possible precipitation was

obtained from the Hydrometeorological Section by letter dated 26 October

1951, Subject: "Review of HMS Report 17, Maximum Possible Predpitation

over the Pecos River of New Mexico," fortfarded as an inclosure with letter

from Office, Chief of Engineers, dated 29 October 1951, Subject: "Spill-

way Flood Study for Alamogordo Dam." Studies were made using table 1 of

the referenced letter from the llydrometoorological Section which is the

most recent study available, and which among others shows several storms

that were computed from observed data in the region of Trinidad, Colorado.

55. The largest storms which occurred in the general region of

Trinidad, Colorado, for which data were given in table 1 referenced in

the preceding paragraph ,1ere studied and adjustments made for inflow

barrier. The barrier corrections ~Jere based on the relation of the in-

flow barrier where the respective storms actually occurred and that of the

Purgatoire River watershed above Trinidad dam site. The adjustment factors

used are identical to those recommended by the vleather Bureau. The adopted

maximum possible storm for the total drainage area of 698 square miles

above Trinidad dam site was based on the average rainfall values obtained

from the three most severe storms. A maximum possible precipitation of

10.0 inches for a 48-hour duration with a maximum 6-hour period of

40

APPENDIX B

.
