c.u.~ Vital to Future Water Demands

Where will you be in the year
20007
If you'll be living in either Utah
or Salt Lake County, then you
won't be alone because projec-
tions estimate the population in
these counties to be 1.24 million
by the turn of the century, up
from 837,000 in 1980. In the
other counties to be served by the
completed Central Utah Project,
the population growth rate is
expected to be even higher.
To meet the water needs of
Utah's growing population,
resources developed by CUP will
playa vital role. By the year
2020, 1.2 million acre feet of
water will be required for con-
sumptive use alone. A diversion
of 2.8 million acre feet, to meet
agricultural and other needs, will
be necessary at that time, accord-
ing to the State Water Plan devel-

oped by the Utah Department of
Natural Resources.
"The report, based on popu-
lation growth and typical water
use, underscored the fact that
inadequate water supplies may
limit future progress and develo-
ment in the state," said Don
Christiansen, general manager of
the Central Utah Water Conser-
vancy District. "The facts were a
little startling and emphasized the
importance of the Central Utah
Project in general and the Bonne-
ville Unit specifically."
Current estimates indicate that
the need for high-quality munici-
pal and industrial water will
increase by more than 97,000
acre feet annually. The Bonne-
ville Unit of the CUP will supply
98,000 acre feet per year to help
meet this demand.

The State Water Plan notes
that the potential use for water
greatly exceeds the water supply
and that priorities for water use
will eventually be required. The
plan further emphasizes that cur-
rent water resources "are not
being fully utilized because of
lack of reservoir capacity to store
and regulate water supplies and
lack of conveyance facilities to
transport the water supply to
points of use. "
New CUP storage structures
will help capture stream flows
during high runoff and release it
when needed. Soldier Creek,
Currant Creek and Upper Still-
water Dams have helped to
increase storage capacity. The
completion of the Jordanelle
Dam will boost capacity even
further.

.

Tho c...... u... ~ BULK RATE
Water Conservancy U.S. POSTAGE
District PAID
355 West 1300 South PERMIT NO. tD30
SALT LAKE CITY.
Orem, Utah 84058 UTAH
C ZZ 005568 S
" I.
