Recreation Facilities at Trial Lake
Are Closed for 1990 Season Due to
Reconstruction Project

"Closed for Repairs." That's
what a visitor to Utah's scenic
Trial Lake will discover this
summer.
Reconstruction of the dam,
spillway and one associated dike
at Trial Lake have required the
closing of the campground and
recreational facilities for the 1990
season. Trial lake is located 26
miles east of Kamas off State
Highway 150.
According to Don Christian-
sen, general manager of the Cen-
tral Utah Water Conservancy
District, the district is rebuilding
the dam, dike and spillway to
ensure safer water delivery to
agricultural users in the Kamas
Valley.
While the recreational facilities
at Trial Lake are operated by the
U.S. Forest Service, the Central
Utah Water Conservancy District
operates the dam and reservoir
under a special-use permit. The
reconstruction project, which
began in June, is expected to be
completed before the start of the
1991 recreational season, said
Christiansen.

According to Rick Patten, dis-
trict ranger for the U.S. Forest
Service, signs have been posted
at the Trial Lake access road on
State Highway 150 indicating the
closure and listing the availability
of nearby alternative camping
and fishing areas. He says that
approximately 15,000 Utahns
visit Trial Lake each year. Patten
also says a reviewing station has
been built at the west end of Trial
Lake Dam to enable the public to
watch the reconstruction activities
from a safe distance.
The size and capacity of Trial
Lake will not be affected by the
reconstruction project. Access to
Mirror Lake and other recrea~
tional areas in the High Uintas
have not been disrupted by the
reconstruction currently in prog-
ress, according to Christiansen.
