/.

.

.

-5-

that our progress has been excellent. We now have ten undergraduate

students majoring in watershed management, including four who were

formerly enrolled in the watershed management option in the forest

management curriculum.

Graduate students this spring total four

and we anticipate thr,ee or four additional graduate students this

fall. These graduate students have been selected from a list of

more than 25 appillicants. Without addL tional help from the state we

will probably have to turn away graduate students next year.

Increasing emphasis upon multiple-use management of wildlands

is inevitable. Consequently, a second major objective of our

program is, so to speak, to "expose" as many students in resource

management and related fields as possible to the principles of

watershed management. Some training in watershed management is now

required of all students attending our forestry summer camp. The

first course in watershed management carries only a prerequisite

of a course in plant, forest, or range ecology and is available

to all students in the University. We hope that some of our courses

will be elected by soil scientists, engineers, and geologists, too.

Interest, location and cooperation all favor the development

of a national training center in watershed management at Colorado

State University.

Needless to say we would be very happy to accept any contri-

but ions which you collectively or individually might be interested

in Watershed Management.

establish scholarships, fellowships or assistantships
1IJe.. mJo+ fV'ldS .,,,It,, 0/ n~ q

r;('~ J:
Q.t">7/-
<".,<]"
wood

in making to

I would like to call your attention, too, to the new

utilization laboratory on campus. Forest survey statistics indicate

that in Colorado our forest growth exceeds the harvest or cut.

1733
