I

)'"

~

......

,1.).''''--""3

'.J1u

,

COOPERATIVE \'lATERSHED MANAGEHENT UNIT AT COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY

Robert E. Dils<~

Forestry has become a many-faceted field. No longer is the

forester essentially a timber producer--rather he is a resource

manager. His charge is the husbandry of wildlife, range, recre-

ation and water resources as well as the timber resource.

The infant among these aspects of resource management, at

least in terms of professional training, is water or watershed

management. Already in many areas, and particularly in the West,

the importance of the water resource and its management over-

shadows the other resources of our wildlands.

Although a course in forest influences was first offered in

1932, our forestry schools have responded largely only in the last

10 to 12 years to the need for professional training in watershed

management.

This response usually was limited to one elective

course covering the field of forest influences and watershed

management in a very general way. In a few cases special options

were arranged in watershed management within forest management or

range management curricula.

(
'\

C', :

In recognition of the need for more adequate training in

watershed management, the Charles Lathrop Pack Forestry Foundation

in 1958 made 3-year grants to the Universities of Arizona and New

Hexico and to Colorado State University with the express purpose

of furthering education in watershed management.
