.<.....,.~-.. . "

II. ALTERNATIVES

A. Overview

The evaluation of the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness Study
Area was directed by Congress in the "Colorado Wilderness
Act" (Public Law 96-560) of December 22, 1980. The
alternatives are whether the area is determined to be
suitable or unsuitable for wilderness designation.
Boundary modifications within the Wilderness Study Areas
were studied for the purpose of improving the
manageability and availability of the WSAs and for
resolving public issues and management concerns. This
resulted in the addition of a suitable with modified
boundary alternative.

Regardless of the alternative determination, the WSAs
will be managed to maintain the existing wilderness
attributes until Congress acts on the proposal. Once
Congress acts, the Forest Plan (Forest Service) and
Management Framework Plan (Bureau of Land Management)
will reflect the decision.

An alternative will be recommended in the Record of
Decision, Final Environmental Impact Statement for the
Pike and San Isabel National Forests Land and Resource
Management Plan. The recommendation, in respect to the
inclusion of the four Bureau of Land Management
Wilderness Study Areas, will be a j oint recommendation
with that agency.

B. Alternatives Considered in Detail

1. Suitable for Wilderness Designation

The selection of this alternative, after review,
would result in a recommendation to Congress that
the entire Sangre de Cristo Wilderness Study Area,
including the contiguous Bureau of Land Management
lands, is suitable for inclusion in the National
Wilderness Preservation System.

15

(I r.
