recognizes that the Forest Service has placed
high priority on providing developed camping,
back-country camping, fishing, and nature study
and recommends that the Forest Service place
increased priority on four-wheeling.

The SCORP for Region 7, which includes Pueblo,
Las Animas, and Huerfano Counties (in which the
southeastern portion of the WSA is located)
recognizes that the 5-year growth rate is low
and is projected to remain low through 1985.
The recreation emphasis is oriented toward the
Arkansas River and Fountain Creek corridors.
The five top activities for participation in
this region are bicycling, swimming, fishing,
picnicking, and softball-baseball.' The SCORP
recognizes that the Forest Service has placed
high priority on providing developed camping,
back country camping and fishing and recommends
the Forest Service place increased priority on
picnicking and four-wheeling.

The SCORP for Region 8, which includes Mineral,
Rio Grande, Conejos, Costilla, Alamosa, and
Saquache Counties (in which the western portion
of the WSA is located) highlights a planned
water development project with significant
recreation implications. It also recognizes
the large amount of public land and low
population density. This area has experienced
fluctuations in population growth with a static
or slighty decreasing trend in 1980. However, a
substantial population increase is expected
between 1980 and 1985. The top four recreation
activities are picnicking, developed camping,
four-wheeling, and day hiking on trails. The
SCORP recognizes that the Forest Service has
placed high priority on providing developed
camping and fishing and recommends that
increased priority be placed on picnicking and
four-wheeling.

b. The Sangre de Cristo WSA is within the Colorado
Division of Wildlife Southeast Region on the
east side of the Sangre de Cristo Range, and
within the Southwest Region on the west side of

9

082617
