I

4

FLOW CHARACTERISTICS OF STREAMS IN THE MISSOURI RIVER BASIN

I

I

STREAMFLOW RECORDS

Selection

I

The streamflow records forming the basis for the data presented
in this series of reports were selected initially by representatives
on the Hydrology Work Group from the Corps of Engineers, Public Health
Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Soil Conservation Service, and Geological
Survey. The stations selected by this group were then reviewed by repre-
sentatives of the principal water-resources agency of each basin State
who recommended addition or deletion of specific stations to further refine
the network. Each agency's station selection or review was largely in
light of the program responsibility of that agency; thus, a number of
stations in the network may be redundant to the particular needs of another
agency. Selection was based, generally, on obtaining an adequate coverage
of representative streamflow stations throughout the basin, giving considerable
weight to length of record and freedom from, or specific knowledge of, regu-
l~tion or diversions.

I

I

I

I

Data for about 550 streamflow stations are presented, of which 60 lie
outside the Missouri basin. In comparison, records have been published by
the Geological Survey for nearly 1800 gaging stations during the more than
80 years of streamgaging in the Missouri River basin. Gaging station records
from areas adjacent to the Missouri River basin were selected for the purpose
of better defining the regional patterns of streamflow along the periphery
of the basin.

I

I

I

Each station record is assigned an index number in downstream order.
This number is the same as that used in the regular series of Geological
Survey reports and appears by each station name.

I

Periods of Record

I

Records through September 30, 1963 (or September 30 of last year of
record, if discontinued prior to 1963) were used in processing flow-duration
and high-flow data. Low-flow sequences were processed on basis of climatic
years, ending March 31. The years are shown on the tabulation sheets.

I

Records for several stations were processed in two or more separate
periods in cases where abrupt changes occurred in the flow regimen, such
as those resulting from dam construction upstream. In such cases, the
same index number is used for each period, but with a different alphabetical
suffix added to distinguish different periods.

I

I

A very few of the stations chosen for this report were discontinued
at some time in the past as progressive changes in the channel made the
site untenable and the station was moved to a better location with equiva-
lent streamflow. In such cases, the two periods of record are considered
continuous and are processed as one record under the name and index number
of the replacement site.

I

I

I
