Recreation. Recreation is one of the authorized project
purposes. The Pueblo Reservoir has the largest water surface
area within a 75-mile radius. The spacious water surface will
entice its recreation usage for individuals and groups who visit
for a single day or weekends. This use includes picnickers,
campers, boaters, fishermen, hunters, and sightseers. The gen-
eral development of the recreational facilities at Pueblo Dam and
Reservoir is designed to serve this group. See Plate 2-8 for
location of recreation sites.

,':;}';::::;:!

'-"',-'''".

.t~:,;_:,: :'

......: .

\;:.....

','.

7-07. Water Quality.

a. The surface water in the Arkansas River and. its tribu-
taries above Canon City is generally of excellent quality.
However, the water becomes progressively worse downstream from
Pueblo. The water which is imported from the Fryingpan River
Basin is of excellent quality. The addition of this water to
the Arkansas River water tends to improve the present quality
of the Arkansas River water. The expected quality changes of
the water include a decrease in the bicarbonates due, in part,
to the mixing of the higher-quality west-slope water, and dilu-
tion of pollution concentrations from upstream sources, particu-
larly during low-flow periods. The normal operations of the
dam and reservoir are expected to maintain the water quality
within acceptable standards.

...,..

.'.-'

.>~\

b. The constraints on controlling water quality are the
lack of water rights and lack of allocated storage for this
purpose.

:~:'::.>:::;:.,::~.":~,i

.:,",'

. .
t~;.~. -, .

: .

7-3
