. ,.

00071 n

.

.

will be published in June 1969. The investigation will identify salinity
sources and various methods of controlling or reducing the salinity concen-
tration in the Colorado River system, estimate cost of the controls, and
define the legal and local problems connected with the control methods.
Thirty-five point sources (springs, abandoned flowing wells, and drains)
of salinity contribution have been identified for further investigation.
Seven areas along streams have also been identified as being heavy con-
tributors of salinity concentration.

The FWPCA has proposed an early action program when the reconnaissance
investigations indicate a point source or area of high salinity contribution
can be controlled. Two flowing wells located on the White River "and
Piceance Creek in western Colorado have been ~roposed for plugging under the
early action program. Plugging these wells will reduce the" total dissolved
salts (TDS) in the Colorado River system by 62,500 tons per year at an esti-
mated cost of $56,000.

Advance Planning

The Fruitland Mesa Project definite plan report was completed in June
1967 and approved by the Commissioner on October 9, 1967. Preconstruction
activities consisting of repayment contract negotiations, land certifica-
tion, and water right agreements are expected to be completed in FY 1969.
Specification designs will also be undertaken on Black Mesa Tunnel.

On the Savery-Pot Hook Project plan formulation, hydrological and
water supply studies are in progress along with revised agricultural sur-
veys, settlement and farm unit layouts, and the compiling of design data
for the project features. Selection of land acreages suitable for service
by the project has been made to replace lands in the Fourmile and Timber-
lake areas that were determined to be nonirrigable. Topographic mapping
of the selected project land areas and structure locations and the engineer-
ing surveys have been completed. The definite plan report is sClleduled to
be completed by the end of FY 1970.

Small Reclamation Projects

Recently the Overland Reservoir Company, Hotchkiss, Colorado, sent in
a partial preliminary draft of ,their application report for review. The
engineers for the Yamcolo Reservoir Company, Yampa, Colorado, are making
comparative dam designs in order to establish a cost estimate that will be
within the Company's repayment ability.

6
