on03~G

.

.

c. March - september
Following acceptance of the schedule, work was initiated on the
FY 1991 tasks (Tasks 2 and 5). Much of the Work Group
accomplishment to date has been in Task 2 (Define Habitat Units).
As with the comparison criteria, much of the baseline data has
been collected. However, as need dictates and new information
becomes available, habitat units may be re-evaluated. Currently,
present condition riverine habitat units for the whooping crane
and forage fish have been defined and nesting area needs for
least terns and piping plovers have been characterized.

To expand on Task 2, an assessment of habitat units resulting
from physical modification of channel conditions was preformed.
To date, all of the modifications thus far have been in the form
of simulating island clearing and leveling and predicting habitat
based on a 1150' wide unobstructed channel. As water management
alternatives are developed, appropriate water management
scenarios will be run using this land management alternative
method. The Work Group is using in stream flow study site 6
conditions to simulate channel modifications. Results of this
effort have been documented by the Work Group.

The Work Group also began formulating water management methods
(Task 5). The Work Group sorted the 17 previously identified
water management methods into eight potential types of water
management. with much discussion, the Work Group developed

6
