,j.'l . J....

.

~vaporacion from reservoirs is calculaced by applyin~ empirical

rates to measured water surface areas; the rates being determined primarily

by comparison with scandard Weather Bureau Class "A" evaporation pans.

Several other categories of use have also teen estimated.

Culinary and domestic depletions by urban areas are known to some

extent. Since the cotal population in urban centers in the Upper Basin

is relatively small and the bulk of the water diverted for domestic use

eventually finds its way back to the water courses as deep percolation from

septic tanks or sewage effluent from the City's sanitary and storm sewage

systems, the culinary and domestic consumptive use is relatively small.

.

Industrial use~ in the past have been relatively minor, but are

becoming more prevalent. This use can be estimated with relatively hieh

precision. The amount diverted, usually by pumpinp" can be accurately

measured as can the returns, if any, to the river system.

Other uses including water used for recre~tion, stockwater and

fish and wildlife are small but have been included in our estimates.

In summary, we feel that the total consumptive use in-basin and

total diversion from the basin are known to a reasonable degree of accuracy

and as shown in the attached table are now significantly less than che

7 1/2 I1AF of wacer allotted chis basin annually by the Compact. Therefore,

the matter of principal concern to the Lower Colorado River Basin for the

immediate future as far as Upper Basin depletions are concerned is the

. assurance that it will receive the water deliveries at Lee Ferry specified by

2
